The God of War presents himself as a mean, no funny business gym teacher, and lucky you, you're right in the middle of his class. Since the Arena of War is lost to the Time Fog, you're stuck doing drills at Avenger's Stadium. Expect to be put through sword fighting, take off and landing, shield practice, and of course the more mundane running laps and doing push ups. Magic is only to be used for shield practice, and anyone causing mischief will have to deal with Ares himself.

Doesn't mean you can't try, it just means it won't end well for you.

Avengers Assemble!

Octobots are attacking a lab space in downtown. Their target: a new chemical compound that is apparently more efficient in powering the wriggly bastards. Get to your assigned teams and get out there before they can make off with that compound, or the octopi will be having the city for dinner tonight!

And Director Fury doesn't give a damn if you don't like your teammates; work it out or don't, just get the job done.

Class is in session, and considering it's Professor Pym's class, it's probably going to blow up in a few minutes. It might be best to make sure your homework is finished and handed in before your lab mate goes for the chemical cabinet, because there's a high chance it'll be on fire otherwise. While your at it, be careful what you touch in the lab; you might end up having an electrifying experience.

...this lab has no safety precautions whatsoever, does it?

Sucks to be you; looks like you just got caught getting into things you shouldn't have been getting into, and the All Father himself found out about it. Now you're stuck in detention in the Timeless Archives, whittling away at a report that no superhero deserves to be put through. It doesn't look like Odin stuck around to make sure you finish it, though; is it worth risking the All Father's ire just to get a few hours on the dance floor at Club A?

» use an energy shield
[Gym class is probably Wanda's least favorite, and if it weren't for the few times she's allowed to use her powers, the least useful to her. Flying is kind of fun at least, though she absolutely hates when it's time for sparring practice. There probably isn't a better way to work on her energy shield, but could they at least use less dangerous-looking weapons?

(Of course not.)

Wanda tugs on her red gloves and turns to face her partner for this round. Last week in a moment of panic she'd accidentally ripped her partner's weapon out of their hands (which was fine) and sent it flying towards their teacher (which was very much not fine). Hopefully nothing goes wrong this time.

Red energy flickers to life around her hands. Stay in control.]

[Wanda's pleased to find that the octobots don't do so well once they're down a few appendages. The residual energy of the hex bolts seems to have a brief mildly corrosive effect, and there's more than one semi-disabled Octobot shambling around with head portions or limbs missing.

Maybe you're holding your own, or maybe you're not. Either way the nearest Octobot suddenly finds half its limbs ripped out from under it and it falls, hitting the pavement hard.]

This is not the time to pull your punches.

[Han is not very good at swords. He's great at fighting--the dirty sort of fighting where everything's a weapon and punching someone in the sensitive bits is totally acceptable, anyway--and shooting things. Swords are--well.

He's terrible at swords. His sum total of knowledge regarding swords is "hit them with the pointy end". He is not at all ready for this.]

Yeah, I am. [Settling into a stance that he copied off some medieval fantasy movie.] You?

[Han has the look about him of someone who will find a way to make it work, even if it's not his weapon of choice. Pietro was always the one more inclined to get into fist fights, and until she came here most of her training was about control at the expense of practicality. No one wanted to actually spar with her when they weren't sure she wouldn't just accidentally explode them.

She shifts her own stance to brace for impact and draws an arc in the air for the energy to follow. There's now a thin barrier between them interlaced with threads of red.]

This is when they say 'come at me,' yes?

[Wanda is not someone Han's had much of a pleasure to know. He's seen her around in the short time he's been here, sure, but they haven't talked very much until now. He thinks he might actually grow to like her.]

For somebody new to being here, you sure pick up quick.

[Right. How did it go in that movie again? Han charges forward with an impressive battle cry, swinging the training sword wildly at the barrier in an attempt to take it down.]

[Wanda spares a furtive glance to where Ares is taking apart another student's technique and winces. This is definitely her least favorite class, but the consequences for screwing up are enough to make her care. But as long as the teacher is preoccupied, Wanda can spare a bit of snarky honesty:]

No one wants to be asked to stay after class.

[The shield flares red where Han strikes it and ripples through the red threads. Wanda herself rocks back with the impact but the barrier holds for now.]

You can hit it harder. I'm all right.

[Wow, poor kid. Han would feel sorrier for him, but his technique is similarly horrible and he'd much rather not be noticed, thanks. He hefts the training sword again, trying to spin it in his hand like he'd seen one of those knights do in movies. It--doesn't look very impressive.

God, what a dweeb.]

Yeah, guess that's a pretty good incentive already. [A breath, before he nods and settles back into that stance again.] All right, but let me know if you're not.

[And with that, he charges forward again and swings at her barrier, putting as much weight as he can behind it.]

[Is he trying to hurt himself? Thankfully, Han keeps his grip and she doesn't have to catch it before there's a repeat of last week.]

You keep doing that, you're going to break your wrist. Or hit the teacher.

[Talking is enough distraction that the shield almost wavers, but although this time Wanda steps back with the impact, it still holds. This is really an exercise in concentration for her.]

Still fine.

You were the one who asked me to hit it harder. [There's a slightly petulant note to his tone--make up your mind already, he doesn't say. As if he's not the one who's probably going to break something from his terrible stances.

The next barrage that comes is a little bit lighter--for all of Han's grousing, he doesn't actually want to break his wrist or hit Ares in the face, so the strikes have less weight to them. But at the same time:] This'd go a hell of a lot easier if he let us use a gun.

[Robots were not quite something he was experienced in dealing with. Shocking them could make them explode...though that was not a strategy he could exploit, not with how tight of a corner he was being forced into. His coat could stop bullets, but large shrapnel was another matter.

Just as he was about to slash the new Octobot in his way, he found it cut down to size by Wanda. He looks as she speaks.]

Unless we can hoard them all in one place and at a safe distance, I can't just shock them all.

Can you stun them?

[Something is better than nothing, right? She's not really sure how everyone else's powers work, obviously, or if that's even possible for Hei. But it has to be better than the sword alone.]

I'd need to find their weak point for easier access. Otherwise, they'll just explode. Haven't much experience in the way of robots.

[Damn old academy could have at least helped with that...]

[ Loki was straddling the line between holding his own and being very frustrated by a bunch of machinery actually having the ability to hurt him.

When one of the limbs finds itself detached with red wisps of power trailing behind it, both of Loki's eyebrows go up as he steps back. ]

Says the woman dismembering things. [ A scoff as he puts all his strength behind shoving the body of the octobot out of the way--considerable strength seeing as it's at least ten feet away from both of them now. ] I'm more interested in finding the program control these creatures.

He is not very smart if he left something we can use. But he also gave them a stupid name.

[It's just really hard to be intimidated by someone who calls himself 'Doctor Octopus.' You'd think a supposed super-genius could at least come up with some sort of moniker with actual weight to it.

Overall it's just a shame these things don't have brains. This would be much easier if they could control them, even for a little bit.]
