The God of War presents himself as a mean, no funny business gym teacher, and lucky you, you're right in the middle of his class. Since the Arena of War is lost to the Time Fog, you're stuck doing drills at Avenger's Stadium. Expect to be put through sword fighting, take off and landing, shield practice, and of course the more mundane running laps and doing push ups. Magic is only to be used for shield practice, and anyone causing mischief will have to deal with Ares himself.

Doesn't mean you can't try, it just means it won't end well for you.

Avengers Assemble!

Octobots are attacking a lab space in downtown. Their target: a new chemical compound that is apparently more efficient in powering the wriggly bastards. Get to your assigned teams and get out there before they can make off with that compound, or the octopi will be having the city for dinner tonight!

And Director Fury doesn't give a damn if you don't like your teammates; work it out or don't, just get the job done.

Class is in session, and considering it's Professor Pym's class, it's probably going to blow up in a few minutes. It might be best to make sure your homework is finished and handed in before your lab mate goes for the chemical cabinet, because there's a high chance it'll be on fire otherwise. While your at it, be careful what you touch in the lab; you might end up having an electrifying experience.

...this lab has no safety precautions whatsoever, does it?

Sucks to be you; looks like you just got caught getting into things you shouldn't have been getting into, and the All Father himself found out about it. Now you're stuck in detention in the Timeless Archives, whittling away at a report that no superhero deserves to be put through. It doesn't look like Odin stuck around to make sure you finish it, though; is it worth risking the All Father's ire just to get a few hours on the dance floor at Club A?

[That's almost alarming... Sure, JP's didn't have all that extensive of a library, but it was at least free to be accessed by all the members...]

Not...exactly. Officially the school library was open to all students. Unofficially....

That's... really kind of weird and also kind of awful, yikes. What school did you even go to?

Kunugigaoka Junior High.... It's a well-known private school in Tokyo. It's...a little different than its reputation.

[Nobody outside the school talks about the discrimination. It's obvious why: if word got out, it wouldn't stand, and Asano couldn't have that. There's a reason even the students of Class E don't reveal the extent of it.]

Yeah, I've heard of Kunugigaoka... My parents wanted to send me there but we couldn't really afford it. [He leans back in his chair, leaving it to precariously teeter on its back legs.] Different how?

[Yeah, the price tag keeps a lot of students out. It's probably for the better, considering the damage the system does...]

My mom was determined to send me there, despite the price. It's...a little complicated. Asano-san created a system in which ninety-give percent of students achieve way higher results than normal at the expense of the five percent who don't.

... Well, that description's kind of immediately worrying.

[Part of him's honestly not sure he actually wants to know but the other part of him's teeming with morbid curiosity, like an onlooker at a terrible wreck.]

You're familiar with the concept of- I think the English word is meritocracy?

The students whose behavior or grades aren't good enough drop into Class 3-E. There isn't a lot of hope once there; the entire school bullies and ridicules the students of the "e-as-in-end" class.

[shiningrabbit]

[The term 'meritocracy' gets him to subtly flinch a little.] Yeah. Way familiar.

[Because while Yamato wasn't out to shape a world around the concept in this AU, hoo boy did the guy harp on about it.]

... Jeez, that's seriously awful! [Even more so that word hasn't even gotten out about it...] And for nobody to have said anything... that's... [He takes a moment, to search for what he feels like is the right word.] ... kind of eerie, I guess.

[He flinched, that's interesting. Maybe the other teen has had some kind of similar experience...something negative connected to the capable profiting off those below them. Something to worry about later.]

I won't go into the details, but everyone says those in Class E don't have a future. [Nagisa suspects the psychological torture devised by Asano is to blame for that.] It isn't uncommon for Kunugigaoka students to say things like "I'd rather die than end up in Class E", so I guess the system is working as intended.

[If "Holy shit, shut up already, Hotsuin-san, we don't care about your ideal world we're fighting for our lives here" counts as negative...]

I guess... still, though, that's horrible. And horrifying. [Suddenly Hibiki's heart goes out to the kids still in Class E.]

...It's not like we don't fight back.

[It's said quietly, with just the hint of a operator's eyes on the back of the neck. Probably just imagination. But Nagisa says it like an in-joke, like a punchline he knows Hibiki won't get. That's fine.]

[Yeah, it completely flies over Hibiki's head.]

Well, that's good... It's clearly worth the trouble, I'm guessing? Since it sounds like you've done it more than once, and I can't imagine there not being consequences...

We've gotten in a lot of trouble for it!

[But he laughs. Honestly by now there's thrill in knowing there will be consequences. Its all part of the challenge. They've picked this fight and they will see it through.

...Ah, well, Nagisa won't it seems. Not anymore. Not directly.]

Since we're on the bottom, we're always thinking that we have to get back at them somehow.

[Hibiki gives a soft chuckle, tipping back more in his seat.]

Must be fun, to knock the arrogant down a peg or several like that. Especially since I imagine they're obnoxious on top of that.

[Class E is the best thing that ever happened to him.]

It's not that so much as proving we can. ...Some of us have a little too much fun, actually.

[...Who is going to keep Karma in line? Oh dear.]

If nothing else, it sounds like things were never boring...

Class E is many things, but none of them are anywhere near "boring". I guess it's never boring here, either?

[He'd expect a school full of kids with superpowers to be nothing short of absolute chaos. It's actually been pretty tame so far, though...]

Two words: science class. [A beat.] I'd suggest trying to get your hands on fireproof folders. Or to make several copies of your homework.

... Ah, and there's also when we actually have to deal with trouble. There hasn't been any major disasters for a while, so I'm guessing we're gonna be due for one in the next week or two.

[Hibiki says the word science and already Nagisa knows it will be bad. Okay. Fire. He can plan for fire and work around it. Trouble and disasters are a little more vague.]

Can you tell me about what kinds of things we might be facing? [He pulls out his notepad. Looks like observing and keeping notes will be the name of the game again.]

I can't give you too many specifics since I haven't been here long, but-- Ah, hang on. [He stops tipping his chair back to dig in his bag before pulling out his phone. He fiddles with it a little before finally flipping it around to show Nagisa.

It's a photo of some of the adversaries from the last incident, each one with some notes detailing their abilities and weaknesses. The notes aren't particularly detailed, but really, it's not like Hibiki's going to be looking much at his phone in a fight anyway.] This is what we went up against last time, and I've heard whispers of robots from some of the students that've been here longer.

[Nagisa's pencil flies across his page...it seems like he's doing more writing than just copying down the data on the phone. Hm.]

Robots? That sounds cool. [In a general sense. But what can he do against robots? He doesn't have Itona's knack for technology, and he won't distract Ritsu from her primary mission....but he's best against people.]

Right? Can you just imagine how tricky those would be to fight? Especially if they were like, I dunno, huge. ... I mean, unless you've got powers or something. I keep forgetting superpowers are a thing half the time.
